What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
