Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
