Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
