US Armed Forces Executes Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense official, the US military carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Strikes
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
