UK Sport Chair Details AI Strategy to Boost Great Britain Athletes Towards Future Medal Success.
The Games and Paralympic Games squads need to embrace artificial intelligence and foster increased collaboration to maintain their recent high-level performance, as stated by UK Sport leader Nick Webborn.
"We have been a highly successful nation, and to keep that standing or to even go higher, we're going to have to operate in new ways," Webborn remarked.
He emphasized the need to "think smarter" and "leverage technologies such as AI effectively in sport," alongside enhancing partnerships between different sports bodies.
Harnessing Technology for Performance
Webborn's vision goes further than podium ambitions. He highlighted several crucial areas where AI could provide significant benefits:
- Talent Identification: Employing analytics to identify potential competitors.
- Reducing Injuries: Forecasting and minimizing physical risks through movement monitoring.
- Remote Classification: Facilitating fair categorization for Paralympic sportspeople without travel.
This follows a recent declaration that British athletes would be given AI-based protection against digital harassment.
Reviewing Recent Games Performance
Although Team GB secured 65 medals at the Paris 2024 Games, matching their London 2012 total, their first-place tally of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the overall table.
"We want to keep punching above our weight," said Webborn. "It's those little things, how we turn those silvers into first places."
He also praised the ParalympicsGB squad, which has repeatedly placed runner-up behind China, while noting that other nations are closing the gap.
Competitor Welfare as a Foundation
During his initial interview after assuming the position, Webborn placed significant emphasis on athlete welfare and post-career development.
"Valuing the athletes who enter our high-performance sports system... preparing for their future, so that the skills they acquire make them a better person... remains extremely important to me," Webborn stated.
Webborn suggested that a supportive environment not only fosters superior performers but also better people for the future.
Upcoming Aspirations and Hosting Major Events
Looking ahead, UK Sport is focused on securing world-class events to Britain. Scheduled tournaments feature the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
Webborn also expressed a long-term "aspiration" to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games again, possibly around 2040.
"Wasn't that incredible in 2012? I'd like for other members of the British public to have similar memories too," he reflected.
Webborn proposed that a potential bid could be innovative, maybe involving multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester working together.
