UK and French Jets Attack Subterranean IS Munitions Facility in the Syrian Desert

Through a combined operation, aircraft from Britain and France have targeted an below-ground site in Syria reportedly occupied by IS.

Information on the Coordinated Attack

The mission occurred on the evening of Saturday in a rugged, mountainous area in the vicinity of the archaeological site of the city of Palmyra.

Guided bombs were used to destroy the access tunnels leading to the site.

“Preliminary assessments suggest the site was successfully hit,” declared a official communiqué.

Forces Deployed

Typhoon FGR4 fighter aircraft executed the bombing mission, aided by a Voyager air-to-air aerial refuelling aircraft to provide mid-air refuelling.

Suspected Use of the Site

The subterranean complex is thought to have been used primarily for the warehousing of explosives and armaments.

The military confirmed the vicinity was free from civilian presence at the moment of the attack.

Official Statements of Intent

A senior defence official emphasized the nation's determination to “stand shoulder to shoulder with key allies” in order to “stamp out any re-emergence” of ISIS.

Appreciation was shown to the service personnel conducting the strike, which aimed to remove threatening militants who threaten our way of life.”

Broader Context

Coalition warplanes have continued to conduct aerial patrols over parts of Syria to prevent a potential resurgence of the extremist organization that held sway over swathes of land in the nation before 2019.
