Toy Story 5 Trailer Sets Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story film debuted, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Previous Film
At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
