The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Reveals No Drought

A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that all of California is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development was driven by weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta well above their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

But, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with having no water worries. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
