A confidential source has told an official investigation that the UK left behind classified devices enabling the Taliban to track down Afghans that had served with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to change residences and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's handling of a massive leak of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had applied to come to the UK to flee the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file containing private information, such as names, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by an official working at British military command in February 2022.

The incident was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain were posted on online platforms.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your exact position. That is what specialized teams did.”

During testimony about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the source stated: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Early investigations submitted to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was put in force in last year and restricted relevant facts about it from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.

“We advised that they moved when possible and changed their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities had access to these details, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the acquisition of the information by the regime was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

Person A described terrible treatment endured by concerned people, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“We have had toddlers who have had limbs fractured to try to get households to say where someone is,” she testified.
