New Year's Celebrants Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are saying an icy start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Proceed In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the Met Office.
Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Transport is anticipated to be disrupted.
- People have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
Readings Set to Drop Further
Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Advisories Activated
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather could to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
