Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
