Powerful winter gusts brought walls down upon fragile tents housing people uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that continue after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Weather

While a ceasefire has been in effect since last fall, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the sufficient housing necessary to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, reported on this week that the dead were two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to experience death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, three members of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population reside in makeshift tents because their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, reports over 440 individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the ceasefire began. James Elder, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than one hundred children below eighteen years old – 60 males and forty females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, tank shelling and employment of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented incidents where enough information had been gathered to warrant recording, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been fighting to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. It’s the third winter since the conflict involving the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
