Fly-tippers have deposited a mountain of garbage in a open space in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental catastrophe unfolding in plain sight" is up to 150m (490ft) extending and 6m (20ft) tall.

The huge heap has appeared in a plot of land next to the River Cherwell near Kidlington.

A local MP highlighted the situation in parliament, declaring it was "risking an ecological catastrophe".

Protection organization stated the unlawful garbage pile was formed approximately a recently by an organised crime group.

"This is an environmental catastrophe unfolding in plain sight.

"Every day that passes raises the threat of poisonous drainage entering the aquatic network, polluting fauna and endangering the wellbeing of the complete watershed.

"The Environment Agency must respond immediately, not in months or years, which is their usual response period."

Access ban had been implemented by the environmental authorities.

It is challenging to distinguish any particular pieces of garbage as it appears to have been shredded with soil mixed in.

Part of the waste from the top of the heap has collapsed and is now merely five feet from the river.

The River Cherwell is a tributary of the River Thames, which indicates it flows through Oxford before connecting with the Thames.

The MP asked the authorities for support to remove the illegal tip before it triggered a fire or was carried into the water network.

Informing elected representatives on Thursday, he declared: "Criminals have dumped a huge quantity of illegal polymer rubbish... totaling hundreds of tonnes, in my electoral area on a water-adjacent land alongside the River Cherwell.

"River levels are increasing and thermal imaging indicate that the garbage is also warming, elevating the danger of fire.

"Environmental authorities said it has limited capabilities for compliance, that the projected expense of clearance is greater than the complete yearly allocation of the regional government."

Cabinet member stated the administration had taken over a struggling disposal business that had resulted in an "growing issue of illegal waste disposal".

She informed MPs the authority had issued a restriction order to prevent further access to the location.

In a statement, the organization said it was looking into the situation and requested for information.

It stated: "We understand the public's frustration about situations like this, which is why we take action against those responsible for environmental offenses."
