The child of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the start of her court case in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over remarks she published on social media four years ago during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.

A week of chaos in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and intentional burning, left at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this unrest and confronts charges of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Case

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a court order to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has always refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier describing the government's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly claimed the charges against her were an bid to settle political disputes with her parent after he established his own political party and competed against the ANC.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related harassment" against the ex-leader and his family.

A few of supporters from her party, the political party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives attended the proceedings inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and does not have compelling evidence for a conviction.
