In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for winning the league MVP award.
• $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
• $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal provides that he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The very next day in the title match against the USA, he slugged a tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday.
