British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
