Arne Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Support Following PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his position following another convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's worst streak since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I have got a lot of backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to turn it around and earn three points naturally but if you are in a managerial role and struggling then it's typical that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the team officials, Slot revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “During our regular discussions I perceive the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Recurring Failings and Player Response
The manager lamented familiar weaknesses from his squad in their European defeat, namely wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to all,” the midfielder said.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool for years.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell like this with outcomes like these.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as it is gone, we will always battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side return to the top, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
