Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
